Disruptive entry & subscriber base
Reliance Jio (a subsidiary of Reliance Industries) launched in 2016 and rapidly transformed the telecom landscape with ultra-affordable data and free voice. It amassed over 479 million mobile subscribers by 2025, making it the largest mobile operator in the country.
Jio’s services include prepaid and postpaid plans packed with high-speed data, as well as fiber broadband (JioFiber) for home internet. This meteoric rise was fueled by attractive pricing and a digital-first approach that drew in millions of users across urban and rural areas.
All-4G network & 5G ambitions
Jio built a modern network from scratch, deploying an all-4G LTE infrastructure without any legacy 2G/3G. Its 4G network reaches over 99% of the population, spanning thousands of towns and villages nationwide.
In 2022, Jio also began rolling out True 5G services and has quickly expanded 5G coverage to hundreds of cities. As of 2025, Jio’s standalone 5G network is live in most major urban centers, aiming for near-complete coverage.
Alongside mobile, Jio’s pan-India fiber backbone supports its broadband and future 5G needs.
