A new name, but still a major mobile and internet provider

One NZ (formerly Vodafone NZ) is New Zealand’s second-largest telco, with over 2.5 million mobile users and a major share of home broadband.

Its portfolio includes mobile services, fiber and wireless broadband, and legacy cable TV/broadband in select cities.

After rebranding from Vodafone in 2023, One NZ retained its tech leadership and strong city coverage, while focusing more on local identity and service quality.

Owns mobile towers and even a legacy cable network

One NZ operates its own mobile infrastructure (4G and growing 5G) and reaches most of the population.

Unlike Spark or 2degrees, One NZ also owns a cable broadband network (HFC) in parts of Wellington and Christchurch — a legacy asset from TelstraClear.

Elsewhere, it relies on the national UFB fiber network (Chorus/LFCs) to deliver internet access, plus offers wireless broadband where needed.

Auckland HFC cable, rural fixed wireless and the lines company behind your power

One NZ has two distinctive footprints that intersect directly with the electricity grid.

In Auckland, the legacy HFC cable network (inherited from TelstraClear) runs on poles and ducts shared with Vector, so a Vector outage often takes the HFC service down with it.

In Northland and other rural regions, One NZ delivers 4G and 5G fixed wireless under the Rural Broadband Initiative, on the territory of Top Energy and other small lines companies. For an overview of how the New Zealand grid is organised, see the New Zealand power outage page.
