New Zealand’s biggest telco by customer reach
Spark is the country’s largest digital services provider, serving around 2.7 million mobile connections and over 700,000 broadband customers.
Its services span mobile plans, broadband (fiber and wireless), and digital extras. Once known as Telecom NZ, Spark is a household name for both personal and business users.
With competitive prepaid offers (via its Skinny brand), bundled plans, and a strong footprint nationwide, Spark leads the market across most segments.
Extensive mobile coverage and strong fiber partnerships
Spark operates its own 4G/5G mobile network, with 4G covering nearly the entire population and 5G expanding rapidly in cities and towns.
For fixed internet, Spark doesn't own fiber infrastructure – it partners with Chorus and Local Fibre Companies (LFCs) under the Ultra-Fast Broadband program.
It also offers fixed wireless broadband, which uses mobile towers to provide internet in areas where fiber may be unavailable.
How to check Spark outages or get help
Need support or wondering if there's an outage in your area? Here's what to do:
- 📞 Call 0800 800 123 from any phone or 120 from a Spark mobile
- 💬 Message Spark using the Spark app, or via WhatsApp, Messenger, or iMessage
- 🧑💻 For guides and account support: Spark Help page
When the lights go out, your Spark fibre goes out too
Most Spark home broadband runs over Chorus fibre, and a fibre router needs mains power to work. When the electricity goes out, the internet usually does too, even if the Chorus network itself is unaffected.
For an overview of how the New Zealand grid is organised and how to find your local lines company, see the New Zealand power outage page.
In Auckland, that local network is Vector; across Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Wairarapa, Powerco; in the Far North, Top Energy.
