BESCOM serves 10 million Karnataka consumers
Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) is the state-owned distribution utility responsible for electricity supply in eight Karnataka districts: Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Davanagere, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Ramanagara. It serves more than 10 million consumers across a 41,092 square kilometre territory home to over 20 million residents.

BESCOM key reliability figures
More than 10 million consumers across eight Karnataka districts.
Coverage area of 41,092 square kilometres, home to over 20 million residents.
Four operating zones, nine circles, 534 section offices.

A grid carved into four zones
BESCOM operates through a layered structure of four operating zones, nine circles, 32 divisions, 147 sub-divisions and 534 section offices. The two metropolitan zones (north and south) cover the dense urban grid of Bengaluru, while the Bangalore Rural and Chitradurga zones extend into semi-urban towns and agricultural belts where the load profile is very different.

- Domestic consumers form the largest segment, with commercial and industrial loads concentrated in the Bengaluru metro area.
BESCOM is a fully owned subsidiary of the Government of Karnataka, regulated by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). It is one of five ESCOMs in the state, alongside the national distribution landscape (MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM and CESCL handle the other Karnataka districts).
Why Bengaluru loses power more than expected
Bangalore's electricity infrastructure has not kept pace with the city's growth. The BESCOM grid combines a dense urban core with rapidly expanding peri-urban zones, where load growth has outpaced substation capacity in several areas.
Monsoon damage
The pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons account for a large share of outages. Heavy rainfall, fallen trees on overhead lines and waterlogged transformers are the most common triggers across the metropolitan zones. BESCOM issues seasonal advisories warning of likely disruptions when the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority flags severe weather.
Planned maintenance shutdowns
Scheduled outages, locally referred to as power shutdowns, are published in advance by BESCOM through area-wise circulars. These maintenance windows usually run between 9 am and 5 pm on weekdays and target feeder upgrades, substation works or tree pruning.
Load shedding in peak summer
Summer peaks pushed Karnataka's electricity demand to record highs in 2024 and 2025, occasionally requiring rotational load shedding in rural feeders to protect grid stability. Urban Bengaluru is usually spared but suburban districts feel the impact.
Helplines and what to do during a cut
The BESCOM 24x7 helpline is staffed by 375 customer support executives at the corporate office in Bengaluru. Calls are recorded for quality control. For complaints by SMS, consumers send a message to 58888 in the format "BESCOM <sub-division code> <nature of complaint>".

Karnataka in the wider India grid
When a Bangalore power cut also takes mobile networks down, several local operators may be affected at the same time. See below for the largest networks in Karnataka:
- Jio — the largest mobile operator in Karnataka.
- Airtel — dominant 4G and 5G coverage across Bengaluru.
- Vi (Vodafone Idea) — third-largest network across Karnataka.
