TNEB serves 27 million Tamil Nadu consumers
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) supplies electricity across all 38 districts of Tamil Nadu through its operating arm TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited). More than 27 million consumers depend on the network, from the metropolitan grid of Chennai to rural feeders in the southern districts.

TNEB key reliability figures
More than 27 million consumers across 38 Tamil Nadu districts.
Installed generation capacity of about 18,732 MW under TANGEDCO.
Distribution split into 44 circles, with Fuse Call Centres in each region.
1912 toll-free helpline and 94987 94987 WhatsApp line for power complaints.
Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) regulates tariffs and grievance redressal.
TANGEDCO and TANTRANSCO split the Tamil Nadu grid
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was established on 1 July 1957 under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948. The 2010 restructuring under the Electricity Act 2003 split it into TANGEDCO for generation and distribution, TANTRANSCO for transmission, and the holding company TNEB Limited. A second wave of restructuring, effective 13 July 2024, trifurcated TANGEDCO into three new subsidiaries: TNPGCL (thermal generation), TNPDCL for distribution and TNGECL for green energy. In practice, consumers still refer to the utility as TNEB.
- More than 27 million consumers across 38 Tamil Nadu districts.
- Installed generation capacity of approximately 18,732 MW under TANGEDCO.
- Distribution organised into 44 circles covering both metropolitan and rural feeders.
- Largest urban load centres are Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem and Tirunelveli.
TANGEDCO is wholly owned by the Government of Tamil Nadu and regulated by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC). Appeals beyond TANGEDCO go to the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum and ultimately the Electricity Ombudsman at TNERC. Tamil Nadu is one piece of the wider national distribution landscape.
Why cyclones drive Chennai's biggest outages
Tamil Nadu publishes one of the most detailed planned outage calendars in India. TANGEDCO releases area-wise shutdown lists, often on a daily basis, covering maintenance, upgrades and feeder rebalancing.
Cyclones and the north-east monsoon
Chennai and the coastal districts sit in the cyclone belt. The north-east monsoon (October to December) regularly causes wide-area outages, with cyclones such as Michaung in 2023 triggering multi-day restoration efforts across the city.
Planned shutdowns by area
Locally known as power shutdowns, these planned outages typically run from 9 am to 5 pm and are published the day before by TANGEDCO regional offices. They concentrate on feeder upgrades, transformer maintenance and tree clearance.
Summer peak demand
Tamil Nadu's peak demand rises sharply from April to June. TANGEDCO occasionally resorts to load balancing measures during these months when generation falls short of demand.
Helplines and what to do during a cut
TNEB runs dedicated Fuse Call Centres in each region for power supply emergencies. Consumers register complaints via 1912, the TANGEDCO website, the TANGEDCO mobile app, or the WhatsApp helpline 94987 94987.
- 1912 — toll-free 24x7 helpline for outages and fuse complaints.
- 0441912 — landline-friendly variant of the helpline.
- 94987 94987 — 24x7 WhatsApp helpline.
- TANGEDCO mobile app and online portal for complaint registration and tracking.
Tamil Nadu in the wider India grid
When a Chennai or Coimbatore power cut also takes mobile networks down, several local operators may be affected at the same time. See below for the largest networks in Tamil Nadu:
- Jio — the largest mobile operator across Tamil Nadu.
- Airtel — strong 4G and 5G coverage in Chennai metro area.
- Vi (Vodafone Idea) — third-largest network across the state.
