BSES Yamuna powers central and east Delhi
BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) is the private distribution licensee for central and east Delhi, a 200-square-kilometre territory serving about 1.65 million consumers. Areas served include Chandni Chowk, Daryaganj, Karawal Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Pahar Ganj, Patel Nagar and Yamuna Vihar.

14 divisions from Chandni Chowk to Mayur Vihar
BYPL started operations in July 2002 when Delhi unbundled the Delhi Vidyut Board under the Delhi Electricity Reform Act 2000. The utility inherited some of the oldest and densest parts of Delhi's electricity grid, including the lanes of Chandni Chowk, Daryaganj and Karol Bagh.
- About 1.65 million consumers across central and east Delhi.
- Coverage area of 200 square kilometres, recorded peak load around 1,459 MW.
- 14 distribution divisions including Chandni Chowk, Karawal Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Mayur Vihar and Pahar Ganj.
- Headquartered at Shakti Kiran Building, Karkardooma, Delhi.
BYPL is a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure (51 percent) and the Government of Delhi (49 percent). Its sister utility BSES Rajdhani covers south and west Delhi. Both report to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) and connect into the broader national distribution landscape through Delhi Transco.
Why outages cluster around old Delhi
BYPL's central Delhi territory carries some of the oldest distribution infrastructure in the city, with narrow lanes that make line maintenance harder than in newer, planned colonies. Outage patterns in this licence area reflect the age of the grid as much as the weather.
Heatwave-driven local trips
Distribution transformers in dense areas like Laxmi Nagar and Karawal Nagar face heavy stress during the May-June peak. Localised outages typically cluster around overloaded feeders.
Monsoon damage in low-lying areas
East Delhi colonies along the Yamuna river face waterlogging risks during heavy monsoon spells. Substations in trans-Yamuna areas such as Yamuna Vihar and Mayur Vihar occasionally lose connectivity for several hours when the Yamuna swells.
Planned upgrades on old feeders
BYPL runs phased upgrades of legacy distribution lines in Chandni Chowk and similar dense pockets. Scheduled shutdowns are published in advance on the BSES portal and through SMS to registered consumers.
Helplines and what to do during a cut
BYPL operates a 24x7 customer care centre. Consumers register complaints by phone, WhatsApp, the BSES portal or the BSES mobile app, using their 9-digit CA (consumer account) number that appears on every electricity bill.
- 19122 — toll-free 24x7 helpline for outages, billing and safety hazards.
- 011-41999808 — emergency / streetlight number.
- SMS service via 5616108 for complaint registration.
- WhatsApp: send #NC + 9-digit CA number to 8745999808 for no-current complaints.
- BSES mobile app and consumer portal for complaint registration and tracking.
Delhi in the wider India grid
BYPL covers central and east Delhi, while sister utility BSES Rajdhani covers south and west, and Tata Power Delhi Distribution covers the north. When a Delhi outage also disrupts mobile coverage, several local operators may be affected at the same time. See below for the largest networks in Delhi:
- Jio — the largest mobile operator in Delhi NCR.
- Airtel — strong 4G and 5G coverage across the National Capital Region.
- Vi (Vodafone Idea) — third-largest mobile network in Delhi.
