A converged home internet provider with national reach

Vox is a leading internet and telecommunications provider offering fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), fixed-LTE broadband, VoIP, and cloud-based services for both residential and small business customers.

It’s known for its customer-centric approach, extensive support options, and premium add-ons such as home security, entertainment streaming, and backup connectivity solutions.

With a footprint across major cities and towns, Vox positions itself as a “one-stop home connectivity partner.”

Shared infrastructure and typical outage origins

Vox delivers services via open-access fibre networks — including Vumatel, Frogfoot, Openserve, and Octotel — and through mobile wholesale networks for its LTE offerings.

Because Vox doesn’t own the physical infrastructure, interruptions can originate from multiple layers:

  • 🛠 Fibre breaks or maintenance by the network operator
  • Power failures impacting aggregation nodes
  • 💻 Routing, DNS, or authentication issues on Vox’s internal systems

The company runs an internal Network Operations Centre (NOC) that monitors all partner networks and posts live updates during major incidents.

How to check status and get help

If you suspect a Vox service outage, here's how to verify and report it:

  • 📞 Customer care lines:
  • Home users: 087 805 0530
  • Business clients: 087 805 0500
  • ⚙️ Check your router or ONT lights before logging a fault — if “LOS” or “Internet” lights are red, the fibre connection may be down due to network maintenance.

Vox usually restores service quickly once the affected fibre network operator resolves the underlying infrastructure issue. Customers can subscribe to email alerts on the outage portal for automatic updates.

LTE Failover and Active-Active: keeping the line up when the fibre or the power goes down

Vox does not build its own fibre or mobile network, but it has built one of the most explicit failover product ranges on the South African market. The LTE Failover service automatically switches a home or office connection from fibre to a Fixed LTE-A line when the fibre is down, then switches back without user intervention once the fibre is restored. It is sold with a small monthly data inclusion and tops up are billed per outage.

For business customers, Vox offers Active-Active Failover bundles that run two diverse links at the same time (fibre plus fibre, or fibre plus wireless), with traffic load-balanced across both. If one link fails, the other keeps the service alive without a noticeable switch. Vox describes the offering as unique on the South African ISP market, and prices it from R1 798 a month excluding VAT. All Vox points of presence are also built with full failover power, so the operator's own backbone stays available even during prolonged grid cuts.

Note that failover protects against link or backhaul failure, not against a power cut at your address. The router and the LTE modem still need power, so a UPS or a battery is required at home. To follow live outage reports across networks and ISPs, see the South Africa power outage map. To check whether the cuts in your area are load shedding rather than a Vox fault, see the load shedding page.
