Building South Africa’s largest residential fibre network
Vumatel is the leading fibre network operator (FNO) responsible for rolling out open-access FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) infrastructure across suburbs and cities.
Its network enables numerous ISPs — including Afrihost, MWEB, Vox, and Webafrica — to deliver internet to households.
Founded in 2014, Vumatel pioneered residential fibre deployment and today connects hundreds of thousands of homes, expanding coverage through both urban fibre rollouts and Vuma Reach, a low-cost prepaid fibre service for underserved communities.
What causes outages on the Vumatel network
Vumatel’s network spans thousands of kilometres of fibre cable, switching equipment, and access points.
Connectivity issues may arise from:
- Accidental fibre cuts caused by third-party construction
- Scheduled upgrades or equipment replacements
- Power interruptions impacting local distribution nodes
- Core network congestion or link failures
Because Vumatel operates a wholesale model, end users report issues to their ISP, who coordinates directly with Vumatel’s operations team. During large-scale outages, updates are posted on the official Vumatel status portal.
How to check for faults and contact support
If your home fibre connection goes down, here's how to confirm whether it's a Vumatel issue:
- 🧭 Check live incidents → Vumatel Network Status
- 💬 Contact your ISP to confirm whether the fault lies on the Vumatel infrastructure.
- 📞 Vumatel residential support line: 086 100 8862 (select Option 3).
- 🧑💻 Submit a query directly on the Vumatel Contact Page.
If your suburb appears red or marked as “under maintenance” on the network map, you’re within an active outage zone. Vumatel typically restores connectivity within a few hours once the fibre break or hardware fault is located.
